Discipline Discussion Groups

What are Discipline Discussion Groups?

Discussion Groups are email “List Services” with each having a focus on a specific discipline topic.  These discussion groups are email lists that serve to facilitate communication within the NRCS to help answer technical and/or procedural questions and to share information for discipline specific issues as applied to NRCS projects.

 Who may subscribe?

The target audience is NRCS State Office and Field Office personnel and their partners who have an interest in the specific discipline topic.  In the list descriptions, they are either identified as a “restricted list” or an “open list.”  Subscription to a restricted list is controlled to protect the privacy and/or sensitivity of the information shared.  For restricted lists, an NRCS employee must send an email to the “list owner” identified in the list description and request to be added to the list.  For open lists, anyone may subscribe as described below and all are welcome.

How do I subscribe to an “open list”?

To sign up for an open list, send a message to: Majordomo@ftw.nrcs.usda.gov

There is no need to enter anything into the subject line.  In the body of the message type: "subscribe <list name>" (Without quotation marks).  For example:

subscribe NRCS_CAD

or

subscribe Design

Note: the text font in the message must be in “plain text” for Majordomo to recognize the commands.  Text in html, rich text, or others will not be recognized.  Also, a signature or vcard should not be included with the email.

If you have trouble, contact the list owner.

To unsubscribe, follow the same procedure except type in the body of the message "unsubscribe <list name>" (Without quotation marks).

What are the list rules?

There are very few rules, but they are important.  The lists are intended to be user friendly.  You can expect courteous, respectful and professional replies to your postings.  If there are any problems associated with the use of a list, you may contact the "list owner" identified within the list description.  The list owner will work off line to try to rectify the problems.  In extreme cases, abusers of the list will be removed from the list and blocked from further participation.

 Group Lists:

1.  What is Soil_Mechanics?    (Open List)

Soil_Mechanics is an open email list with a focus on general geotechnical subjects including design of new embankments, rehabilitation of older embankments, design of animal waste storage structures that may have clay liners or geosynthetic liners, and subjects of general geotechnical interest.  The target audience is NRCS State Office and Field Office personnel and their partners who have an interest in geotechnical engineering.  The discussion group has been established to facilitate communication within the NRCS in the areas of geotechnical engineering as applied to NRCS projects.  Occasionally, messages will be sent out with suggestions for sources of good technical information in which group members may be interested.  News on development of new policy and guidance documents will be provided.  Input will occasionally be requested from group members on development needs for training and other technology.  Members will be encouraged to submit questions for discussion by other members in the list, thus generating the sharing of information.
